The news events that have caught my attention recently happened in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The King of Saudi Arabia overturned the lashing sentence of Sheima, an Arab woman who was found driving. If the King had not intervened, she would have received 10 lashes for disobeying one of the norms of the society.
This is an example of what Newman defined as “Mores,” a type of norms sometimes codified into laws that are taken very seriously by society. (Newman, page 106).

Wow!!!

Wow! This was really interesting, thanks for drawing our attention to it. It's quite intriguing to consider how different mores and norms in one culture are from another. For example, consider how in most families it is considered the norm for the husband to drive with the wife in the passenger seat, and when it's reversed people often give strange looks, particularly if their are children in the back seat! I think this social expectation in our culture is an interesting comparison.
ReplyDeleteZiegs, isn't this interestingg? As an adage in my culture which says another man's food is another man's poison. Sometimes we don't value the liberty of freedom we are blessed with until we experienced other people's lives and societies. Imagine how miserable life will be if women are prevented from driving in United States... but again this is one of the distinguishing elements of norms, values and beliefs that shaped our lives.
